Ogido ensemble

The ogido is a cousin of the gbedu. It is shaped like a conga but with a wider array of sounds and a bigger body. It also has a much deeper sound than the conga. It is sometimes referred to as the "bass drum". Both hands play directly on the drum.

In the Gbedu family each backing drum is played by one drummer using an open palm and a stick in the other hand. In contemporary Yoruba music two or three congas are played at once by one musician. With these congas, the use of sticks or open palms or a combination of both is a matter of taste. The congas are sometimes referred to as akuba.
